BACKGROUND
[0001] Several conventional application activation interfaces allow users to activate applications by selecting an icon or label associated with the application. These interfaces often include these icons or labels in a flat list, in a file-based hierarchy, or grouped by page. If a user wants to find and select an app, the user scrolls through the list, searches through levels within the hierarchy, or jumps through pages until the user finds the icon or label. This process can be tedious for users, especially if the interface has several applications to choose from.
[0002] To address this boredom, some application launch interfaces allow users to move these icons or labels within a flat list, file-based hierarchy, or page-oriented groups. This can help users, as frequently used applications can be oriented at the top of the flat plane, at a higher level in the hierarchy, or at the first or second page of page-oriented groups.
[0003] Moving the icons or labels within these application activation interfaces, however, can be tedious and confusing. A user wishing to move an icon from a sixth page of icons, for example, may need to select the icon, select move to another desired page, once on the desired page drag the icon at the bottom of the page, move other icons on this page desired manually to a desired arrangement within the page, and then go back to the sixth page to manually arrange the icons remaining on the sixth page. [00021] This document describes techniques for organizing tiles. These techniques allow users to better utilize their selection interfaces through simple and easy organization of tiles within these interfaces. For application activation interfaces, for example, the techniques allow users to organize tiles within groups and across groups intuitively and with little effort. Not only can moving tiles be made easier by techniques, but techniques can also automatically reflow the tile arrangement into which, or from which, the tile is moved.
[00022] Although techniques for organizing tiles can be implemented on any number of different devices, systems, environments, and/or configurations, illustrative modalities for organizing tiles are described in the context of the devices, systems and illustrative methods below. Illustrative System
[00023] Fig. 1 illustrates an illustrative system 100 in which techniques to organize tiles can be incorporated. System 100 includes a computing device 102, which is illustrated with six examples: a laptop computer 103, a tablet computer 106, a smartphone 1098, a signal decoder 110, a desktop computer 112, and a gaming device 114 , although other computing devices and systems, such as servers and netbooks, can be used.
[00024] The computing device 102 includes the processor (processors) of the computer 116 and the computer readable storage medium 118 (medium 118). Medium 118 includes an operating system 120, window-based mode module 122, immersive mode module 124, manager 126 and applications 128. Computing device 102 also includes or has access to one or more videos 130, of which four examples are illustrated in Fig. 1.
[00025] Window-based mode module 122 is capable of presenting applications 128 through windows having frames. These frames can provide controls through which to interact with an application and/or controls allowing a user to move and scale the window.
[00026] The immersive mode module 124 provides a mode by which a user can view and interact with applications 128. In some embodiments, this mode presents content and allows interaction with applications with little or no window frame and/or without a need for the user to manually scale or position the content. This mode can be, but is not required to be, hosted and/or externalized without using a typical desktop mode (eg window-based). Thus, in some cases, the immersive mode module 124 features an immersive mode that is not a window (even one without a substantial frame) and precludes the use of desktop-like displays (e.g., a taskbar). Also, in some modes, this immersive mode is similar to an operating system in that it cannot be closed or be able to be uninstalled.
[00027] Manager 126 provides an application selection interface that allows selection to launch, present, or revisit applications 128, either in window-based or immersive modes. Manager 126 also allows users to organize tiles within the application selection interface. Note that although system 100 and manager 126 are described in the context of application selection interfaces, manager 126 can operate to organize tiles, icons, or labels in other contexts, such as file systems, image retrieval systems , document retrieval systems, among others.
[00028] Operating system 120, mode modules 122 and 124, and manager 126 can be separated from each other or combined or integrated in some way. Thus, in some cases, operating system 120 includes mode modules 122 and 124 and manager 126. Illustrative Methods
[00029] This document now describes illustrative methods for organizing tiles. These methods are presented as sets of blocks that specify operations performed, but are not necessarily limited to the order presented. Parts of the following discussion make reference to system 100 of Fig. 1, which reference is made for example only.
[00030] Fig. 2 represents a method 200 for organizing tiles, including ways in which to move a tile within or between groups of tiles. Block 202 receives selection of a tile selected from several tiles displayed in a first preview in a user interface. This selection can move the selected tile from a current location within the various tiles to a region of the user interface.
[00031] Before this document continues to illustrate an illustrative user interface, note that this selection can be through a number of ways, including single or multiple gestures. Gestures can be received through a mouse pointer, touch gestures made through a touch-sensitive display that displays the interface, and motion-sensitive gestures, such as through the motion detection device used in some game systems, to name just a few.
[00032] The interface in which the various tiles are displayed, as partially cited above, can be of various types, such as application selection interfaces and file systems. Thus, tiles in an interface can represent applications, images, files, and so on. Additionally, tiles are not necessarily passive or flat, but instead can display content, such as from the app itself or from a remote source associated with the app even if the app is not itself running.
[00033] By way of illustration, consider an illustrative application selection interface 300 shown in Fig. 3. Application selection interface 300 displays various tiles associated with various applications. Each tile is associated with an application and indicates this association, just as with a graphic or textual descriptor. Applications can be selected via these tiles, such as via a mouse click or gesture (eg via a touchscreen implementation of video 130). However, in some cases applications can be selected as a group and/or via a hotkey or other way of selection other than directly via a tile.
[00034] Manager 126 of Fig. 1 provides interface 300 and includes thirteen selectable tiles associated with thirteen applications. Tiles 302, 304 and 306 are large tiles associated with Network-enabled content-driven applications, tile 308 is a large tile associated with a local word processing application, and tiles 310 and 312 are small tiles associated with applications oriented by content enabled with Network.
[00035] As noted above, block 202 can receive a selection through a touch gesture, such as a touch gesture 402 illustrated in Fig. 4. This gesture 402 selects and moves tile 304 to an upper edge region 404. This region can be an area or border within interface 300. Although not required, the use of an up or down selection (for example, gesture 402 in Fig. 4) can be useful to differentiate this type of gesture (up and down instead of left and right) from other gestures. Here, up and down moves are used to arrange tiles, while left and right moves are generally used to pan or scroll through the tile. This differentiation helps users in their intuitive use of the interface and, in some cases, removes the need to describe or clutter the interface with instructions or information. Note that the top edge region 404 may be user-indicated or not indicated; here, it is presented for the purpose of illustration. Manager 126 can immediately continue to block 204 when a part or point of contact of a gesture is within a region or wait for a permanence or hover gesture in the region, such as waiting until gesture 402 hovers over the region of top edge 404 before continuing to block 204.
[00036] Block 204, in response to the selection, shortens from the first view to a second view, the second view including multiple other tiles not displayed in the first view. As mentioned in part above, the gesture or other selection can be continuous or otherwise. An illustrative multiple gesture is provided elsewhere in this document.
[00037] Continuing with the example in progress, assume that gesture 402 is continuous, meaning that gesture 402 is a single gesture maintained at least during blocks 202, 204 and 206 of method 200. For the case of continuous gesture, the manager 126 "sticks" tile 304 to a selector (for example, an inside or pen) that makes gesture 402. Thus, although gesture 402 is maintained and tile 304 sticks to the finger shown in Fig. 4, the manager slows down to show several other tiles not shown on first view. This second view is illustrated in Fig. 5, which shows interface 300 having several different groups 502, 504, and 506 of tiles in lower resolution. Group 506 includes tiles shown in Figs. 3 and 4, although smaller (and partially obscured). Tile 304 is displayed at full size, although it can be collapsed to match the resolution of tiles in groups 502, 504, and 506.
[00038] Block 206 receives the selection by moving the selected tile to a new location in the second view. This selection can be a drag from the selected tile to the new location or a stop or hover gesture over the new location, such as when a single continuous gesture is used. This new location can be addressed by manager 126 in different ways. In one case, method 200 automatically places the selected tile in the new location and without further selection. In another case, method 200 waits for further selection. In either case, however, method 200 can zoom in to display several tiles at a higher resolution in block 208.
[00039] Block 208 enlarges the new location, the enlargement presenting a third view. The third view includes the new location and one or more of several other tiles. In cases where method 200 automatically places the selected tile without further selection, the selected tile is shown placed inside the group.
[00040] In cases where method 200 does not automatically place the selected tile in the new location, but instead waits for further selection, the selected tile is not displayed inside the group, although it may be displayed outside or imposed on the group.
[00041] In the ongoing example, manager 126 receives another part of gesture 402, this part selecting to move tile 304 to a location 602 near the tiles within group 502 of Fig. 5. The result of this move is shown in Fig. 6.
[00042] In response, the manager 126 zooms in to present the various tiles of the group 502 and the selected tile 304 in a view with higher resolution 702, which is illustrated in Fig. 7. In this case, the tile is shown still connected with a gesture selector 402 is imposed on the group 502. Thus, in this case, the manager 126 zooms in to present tiles in the group within which the new location resides. Manager 126 can then wait for a precise location in which to place the selected tile.
[00043] Method 200 continues to block 210 along the "Wait for Selection" path if awaiting a precise location within the tile group or to block 212 along the "Auto-Place" path if the manager places the tile selected in the new location in the group without further selection.
[00044] Block 210 receives a third selection, the third selection placing the selected tile between or adjacent to one or more of the various tiles. The manager 126 can indicate via feedback, before receiving the third selection, valid locations between or adjacent to one or more of several tiles on which the selected tile can be placed, in response to a selected tile being moved around the group, such as changing a tile appearance (for example, slanting the tiles) above and/or below the location in which the currently selected tile resides (for example, the location of tile 304 in group 502 of Fig. 7). In other cases, the manager 126 indicates generally valid locations, such as by shading or coloring an adjacent space or between tiles.
[00045] Block 212 places the selected tile in the new location. As mentioned, this new location can be received in block 206 or 210.
[00046] As noted above in block 202, a selection moving a tile from a current location to a region of a user interface can include a marked area within the user interface. This is illustrated in Fig. 8 in the 802 marked area. Although not required, this 802 marked area indicates with text ("Tile Bucket") that tiles in this region can later be moved within this or other tile groups. Here, assume that tiles 304, 308 and 310 are selected and placed in the area marked 802, each with separate selections (eg three mouse clicks or drag and drop gestures). In response, the manager 126 indicates that these tiles are removed from their current locations with shaded blocks at the original locations of the selected tiles in 804, 806 and 808 respectively. Manager 126 also indicates that the selected tiles are ready to be moved by shading the tiles (here, small versions of the tiles) within the 802 marked area. Method 200 then allows movement of each selected tile, one by one, or simultaneously , such as by multiple or single repetition of blocks 204, 206, 208, and 212 or 210 and 212. If moved simultaneously, one of the selected tiles is moved to the new location and the others among the tiles are moved adjacent to the new one localization. By doing so, the techniques allow users to move multiple tiles within or across groups quickly and easily.
[00047] Separately or in conjunction with method 200, techniques can automatically reflow tiles from a group in response to a tile being moved, as described in method 900 below.
[00048] Fig. 9 represents the 900 method for organizing tiles, including automatically reflowing tiles. Block 902 features several tiles within an arrangement. The arrangement can be any of the groups set out above as well as other tile organizations, such as a group having a circular or three-dimensional pattern (for example, layers of columns and rows). In the ongoing example, the arrangement includes several columns and rows, such as those shown in Fig. 3, groups 502 or 506 of Fig. 5, or group 1002 of Fig. 10.
[00049] As part of reflowing tiles within an array, various rules can be used, such as top to bottom and then left to right. Instead, other rules can be used, such as right-to-left or bottom-up (for example, in cultures where the language is not normally arranged left-to-right). In an ongoing example, an array is ordered to have the superior and subordinate locations. This illustrative arrangement has the leftmost column with the top locations to locations within the columns arranged to the right of the leftmost column, and a row above each column having locations higher to locations within each column arranged below the topmost row .
[00050] Block 904 receives the selection to place a selected tile in a location within the array and in which a current tile of the various tiles resides. These tiles, as mentioned, can be selected and placed as described in method 200 or otherwise, such as by automatic scrolling within the same arrangement or by a different arrangement by dragging and dropping a tile from a location outside the screen to the selected location.
[00051] Additionally, before placing the tile at the selected location, the manager 126 can indicate the location where the selected tile will be placed, such as by skewing an immediately higher tile or a current tile at the location in response to a stop, hover over, or move over the location of the selected tile. The manager 126 can also indicate the location by previewing the arrangement arrangement if the tile is placed at the location and the tile arrangement is reflowed based on placement.
[00052] As an example, consider Fig. 10, which illustrates the placement, through a gesture 1004, of tile 1006 at location 1008. Note that tile 1010 currently resides at location 1008.
[00053] Block 906 places the selected tile at the location in the array. Method 900 can perform block 906 before, after, or in conjunction with block 908. Thus, reflow can be presented before, after, or at the same time as placing the selected tile in the location.
[00054] Block 908 automatically reflows one or more of several tiles within the array, the reflow moving at least the current tile to a subordinate location in the array. The manager 126 reflows tiles from the array in response to the selection to place the tile in the location. By doing this, users do not need to spend time or effort to manually arrange the tiles in the arrangement.
[00055] In the current example, the arrangement is sorted by column from top to bottom and then by row from left to right. For this order, manager 126 moves the current tile and any subordinate tiles to the current tile below their respective columns unless there is no lower location in their respective columns, and if there is no lower location in their respective columns, moves the tile over its respective columns to a column arranged to the right of its respective column.
[00056] The result is shown in Fig. 11. Manager 126 places tile 1006 at location 1008 and reflows the tiles from group 1002. The automatic reflow movement is shown with reflow path 1102, which illustrates the reflow of tiles from top to bottom, then left to right, then top to bottom.
[00057] In addition to automatically reflowing an array due to placing a selected tile within an array, techniques can also reflow tiles in response to removing a tile from an array (either a different array or the same array within the array. which is tile is moved). As an example, consider again Fig. 4, which illustrates the selection of tile 304 for removal of interface 300. In Fig. 4, the location from which tile 304 is removed is shown with a dashed-line box 406. However, the techniques may reflow the other tiles of interface 300 in Fig. 4 in response to moving tile 304. In such a case, reflow may be immediately in response to selecting a tile, such as in block 204, or after placing the selected tile in its new location in block 212.
[00058] Whether automatically reflowing tiles into an array in response to the removal or addition of a tile, the techniques can also reflow subarrays within an array. Consider again Fig. 11, which shows small tiles 1104, 1106, and 1108. Small tile 1104 is currently at location 1110. In response to a selection to move small tile 1108 to location 1110, manager 126 reflows the small tiles within the subarray consisting of the small tiles. This is illustrated in Fig. 12, which shows the result of manager 126 automatically placing small tile 1108 at location 1110, moving small tile 1104 to the right, and then moving small tile 1106 down (and then all subordinate tiles as shown by path 1202).
[00059] As noted above, techniques can automatically reflow an array in response to a tile being removed from a location in an array and/or a subarray. As shown in Fig. 12, tile 1108 has been moved. In response, manager 126 moved a formerly subordinate tile, tile 1204, to the original location of tile 1108. Techniques can do this in the opposite way as cited for adding tiles, such as a reverse direction of path 1102 or 1202. , if tile 1106 is moved to a different array, deleted, or otherwise moved, manager 126 automatically reflows tiles in group 1002 of Fig. 12 to move a subordinate tile to the location originally occupied by tile 1106 (in this case, with a large tile).
[00060] In some cases, a user may decide not to move a tile. Consider a case where a user moves a selected tile to a location in an array. Here, assume that the manager 126 shows a preview of what the arrangement will look like if the selected tile is added at this location. The user, in response, decides again to move the tile. The techniques allow the user to quickly and easily invert the moved tile back to its original location. The user can indicate this decision to abandon tile movement in various ways, such as by selecting a hotkey or by dragging the tile to a particular region of a user interface, outside the array or interface, or in a location not indicated as valid within the interface. Manager 126 can enforce that the techniques are reversing the tile back to its original location, such as by displaying the selected tile back to its original location. If the original location is not shown in the current view, the manager 126 automatically presents a previous view showing the original location.
[00061] The preceding discussion describes methods in which techniques can operate to organize tiles. Aspects of these methods can be implemented in hardware (eg, fixed logic circuitry), firmware, software, manual processing, or any combination thereof. A software implementation represents program code that performs specified tasks when executed by a computer processor. Illustrative methods can be executed through computer-executable instructions, which can include software, applications, routines, programs, objects, components, data structures, procedures, modules, functions, and so on. Program code may be stored on one or more computer-readable memory devices, either local and/or remote from a computer processor. The methods can also be practiced in a distributed computing mode across multiple computing devices. Additionally, the aspects described in this document are platform independent and can be implemented on multiple computing platforms having multiple processors.
[00062] By way of example, these techniques can be incorporated into one or more of the entities shown in system 100 of Fig. 1 and/or illustrative device 1300 described below, which can be further divided, combined, and so on. . Thus, system 100 and/or device 1300 illustrate some of the various possible systems or apparatus capable of employing the techniques described. Entities of system 100 and/or device 1300 generally represent software, firmware, hardware, complete devices or networks, or a combination thereof. In the case of a software implementation, for example, entities (eg, manager 126, mode modules 122 and 124) represent program code that performs specified tasks when executed on a processor (eg, processor (processors) 116). The program code may be stored in one or more computer readable memory devices, such as computer readable storage medium 118 or computer readable medium 1314 of Fig. 13. Illustrative Device
